Cleveland Monsters Hockey
The Cleveland Monsters are a professional ice hockey team in the American Hockey League (AHL). They were originally known as the Lake Erie Monsters and began playing in 2007. In 2015, the team became the top affiliate of the Columbus Blue Jackets of the National Hockey League (NHL). The Monsters offer a fun family atmosphere with affordable ticket prices.
The Monsters play their home games at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in downtown Cleveland, Ohio which has a capacity of 10,000 spectators for hockey games. They have had a successful run since joining the AHL, making the playoffs six times and winning their first Calder Cup championship in 2016.
The Monsters have been instrumental in developing talent for the Columbus Blue Jackets, and many current NHL players have spent time playing for the team, including Josh Anderson, Oliver Bjorkstrand, and Zach Werenski.
The Monsters' successful 2015-16 season not only set a franchise record in points, but it also saw them win their first ever division title. The team was led by captain Ryan Craig and standout goaltender Anton Forsberg, who was named the AHL's playoff MVP after posting a 9-0 record with a 1.34 goals against average and .949 save percentage in the playoffs.
After winning the Calder Cup in 2016, the Monsters saw some changes in their coaching staff and roster, but they have continued to be a competitive team in the AHL. In addition to John Madden and Mike Eaves, the Monsters have also had other notable coaches including David Quinn (who is now the head coach of the NHL's New York Rangers) and Monsters legend Derek Lalonde, who guided the team to the playoffs in 2019.
Despite the challenges of the COVID pandemic, the Monsters have persevered and have continued to be an important developmental team for the Blue Jackets. The team's current head coach is Mike Eaves, and some of the Monsters' top players include forwards Tyler Angle and Carson Meyer, defenseman Andrew Peeke, and goaltender Daniil Tarasov.
